Well drat. The Addams Family motto of “Sic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc” isn’t real latin. According to The Campvs, it’s bad nonsense Latin that translates to something like “Thus do we growl that (our) big toes have, at this moment, been thrown up from below!”
So, do I completely discard the notion of getting that phrase as a tattoo, or do I keep the idea because anyone who knows the phrase will know it’s from the Addams Family movie? Yes, these are some of the questions I ponder.

I too have wrestled with this very question for years now! One side of me wants to stay true to the credo (not just lovely words), but I know deep down inside when I look at the tattoo the part of me that took Latin in HS will cringe.

I’m only in first year Latin, but “sic” translates to “so” or “such” and “nunc” is “at the present time”. “Allos” is the past (first person plural, I believe but don’t quote me on that) tense of “to allow”. I’d have to ask my instructor on the rest.

Haha, I figured you knew it wasn’t real when you said that! I think you should get it, anyway.

Or you could get a proper Latin translation done, and get that tattooed. It’s a great motto.

Don’t they say it means ‘We eat our enemies’ or something? Translate what it’s supposed to mean into proper Latin, and get that in the appropriate font? Is that a good compromise?

My opinion: DO IT! True Addams geeks will know why you have it, and don’t mind those who don’t get it. I mean, it’s Addams Family! =D
We’re throwing a big Addams Family birthday party in April, and yes, we wrote the motto on the invite ^.^

I would get it with something like Thing holding it or pointing to it, or isn’t it on a gravestone in the movie? Maybe with Morticia’s wrong translation below it? I love it too.

Would the true latin be better? I mean it’s not Morticia’s famous quote, actually it sounds damned demonic: nos laetus epulor qui domito nos

yea i say if you go for it have something Addams family related after it so there’s no questioning where it came from, otherwise I’d just 86 the whole idea

That’s a sticky one. I’d find something else because it would bother me, personally.

if you added something addams themed, like a bat around the edge, it would lean more toward the motto instead of the nonsense, I think.
