James Griener (left) and Paul Harris were the first couple in Clark County to get a marriage license Thursday as same-sex couples were issued marriage licenses for the first time in Washington as a new law took effect. Harris is a manager in the records department so arranged that the pair, who have been together for 39 years, could be first to get the paper work that will allow them to marry anytime after a 3-day waiting period. As the Seattle Times put it:
Paul Harris manages the section of the Clark County Auditor’s Office that issues marriage licenses. But as a gay man in a committed relationship for nearly 40 years, he’s not been able to get one for himself.
Until now.
Came across this story and it has me choked up. Two people in a committed relationship for four fucking decades, wanting to get married—quite possibly needing to get married for legal and insurance reasons—and not being able to. Meanwhile, being in a job where you issue marriage licenses to opposite-sex couples all day, with little fanfare.
I’m so happy for them that this day finally came. Their facial expressions pretty much say it all.
