Color me pleasantly shocked, because it is far, FAR better than I had feared. Every “zany!” moment in the trailer was apparently picked to give people the completely wrong idea about the movie, because they’re just that, brief moments. The rest of the movie is far closer in tone to Sleepy Hollow. It’s almost every paranormal Gothic Romance Novel cliche rolled into one, and covered with brooding atmosphere. The parts that made me cringe the most (aside from the fang-brushing scene) were the scenes where 70s music was being used to lighten the brooding, flee-across-the-rocks-in-the-moonlight tone of the rest of the movie. 

It wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t the train wreck I dreaded. In fact, I want to go see it again, and I’m definitely going to be buying it. So, I’m not just relieved, I’m happy!

Well, early screenings for Dark Shadows have said that the film is more akin to Sweeney Todd with a hint of Beetlejuice’s comedy.

Can we all please stop automatically saying that the film is going to be crap based on a few trailers that have clearly been cut for comedy, and the fact that it’s considered “cool” to bash Burton now?

I am hoping, hoping, HOPING that this is true, and that Dark Shadows is a callback to Sweeney Todd with a dash of Beetlejuice. Because THAT is the movie I was hoping for. 

I’ll admit it: I was one of the people disappointed by Alice In Wonderland; disappointed enough that I didn’t bother buying it. But I’m still a huge Tim Burton fan, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Dark Shadows is a return to his classic form. 

Okay people who are good at snagging images from trailers! I need an image from the Dark Shadows trailer: the image of Barnabas standing there holding his parasol. Help?

::raises an eyebrow:: I just watched the trailer for Dark Shadows. I … am not sure how I feel. It looks FAR campier than I expected, and I was expecting a pretty high camp level. I’ll still go see it, but with much lower expectations than I originally had.
