I’m reposting this one from gothconfessions for an important reason. YOUR SAFETY COMES FIRST. Ignore anyone who deems you “less Goth” because you aren’t willing to risk your safety for fashion. Anyone who is being that sort of an elitist is a fool, and I will quite happily tell them so. Good luck to the original poster in being able to eventually leave that small and dangerous town behind.

gothconfessions:

Full Confession (Submitted Anonymously) - I love the subculture, music, and fashion but I live in a small town area where it’s unsafe to dress goth. I was physically assaulted once. The only connection I have to the subculture is online. Several goths have said because of this I’m not goth enough or been very mean to me because of this. I’m sorry, but I’m not putting my life in danger just to live up to elite standards. Though I admit I do dream of the day where I get out of this awful place and can safely be who I want to be.

If I don’t grow up to be Mary Poppins, Auntie Mame, or Morticia, I’m going to turn into one of the aunts from Practical Magic. I know it.

I need this painted on one of my walls.

I need this painted on one of my walls.

Normally, in anything I do, I’m fairly miserable. I do it, and I get grumpy because there is a huge, vast gulf, this aching disparity, between the platonic ideal of the project that was living in my head, and the small, sad, wizened, shaking, squeaking thing that I actually produce.

Yet another Important Truth.

Yet another Important Truth.

But this absolutely goes with the quote I just posted. Yes.

I should not find this as funny as I do. True, and a little painful, but also very funny. If you can’t laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?

Being a writer is a very peculiar sort of a job: it’s always you versus a blank sheet of paper (or a blank screen) and quite often the blank piece of paper wins. It has no job security of any kind, and depends mostly on whether or not you can, like Scheherazade, tell the stories each night that’ll keep you alive until tomorrow. There are undoubtedly hundreds of easier, less stressful, more straightforward jobs in the world. Personally, I can’t think of anything else I’d rather do, but that’s me.

If you want to be a writer, write. You may have to get a day job to keep body and soul together (I cheated, and got a writing job, or lots of them, to feed me and pay the rent). If you aren’t going to be a writer, then go and be something else. It’s not a god-given calling. There’s nothing holy or magic about it. It’s a craft that mostly involves a lot of work, most of it spent sitting making stuff up and writing it down, and trying to make what you have made up and written down somehow better. …

It does help, to be a writer, to have the sort of crazed ego that doesn’t allow for failure. The best reaction to a rejection slip is a sort of wild-eyed madness, an evil grin, and sitting yourself in front of the keyboard muttering “Okay, you bastards. Try rejecting this!” and then writing something so unbelievably brilliant that all other writers will disembowel themselves with their pens upon reading it, because there’s nothing left to write. Because the rejection slips will arrive. And, if the books are published, then you can pretty much guarantee that bad reviews will be as well. And you’ll need to learn how to shrug and keep going. Or you stop, and get a real job.

Remember this.

Remember this.

You know what, mommy? Vampires are my favorite persons. They drink people’s blood, and they have the sharpest teeth. That’s what makes them so interesting.
Matilda, aged 5 and a half. Yes, I think she’s adorable. (I already did, but this quote certainly helps.)

I have never listened to anyone who criticized my taste in space travel, sideshows or gorillas. When this occurs, I pack up my dinosaurs and leave the room.

I’m just like any modern woman trying to have it all. Loving husband, a family. It’s just, I wish I had more time to seek out the dark forces and join their hellish crusade.

perkybat is absolutely right. Goth and punk fashion is BASED on DIY. Make your own patches! Alter your clothes until they’re what *you* want, not just what you were able to find in the store.
perkybat:
I felt the need to post this because a lot of people are actually complaining about this, and I find it kinda ridiculous. DIY is always a better option than paying craploads of money for shitty quality, off-the-rack items!
But even if you don’t have time to customize your own stuff you can go for:
custom screen printing
custom embroidery
requesting a custom item from an Etsy seller
supporting your local artist-types instead of gawht stores - pay someone talented to do it for you
auction sites
ETA: Yeah I totally get “goth problems” are a joke, but I’ve seen dozens of people complaining about this IN ALL SERIOUSNESS. This post is aimed at them.
